Brisbane: Re-civilization excercise

Fabienne and myself arrived in Brisbane on Wednesday afternoon 11.November. On our way back we were joined by Alex, Trevor's son who lives in Sydney. So then we were three people who flew to one of the nicest places in the world and somehow were not happy to be there as all of would have loved to stay in PNG.

Reverse Culture Shock
When we arrived in Brisbane I was so irritated by the "western world" that I was seriously struggling: the short skirts and hot pants of the Aussie girls, the shining floor in the airport building, far toooo many magazines in the news-shop, overladen cake and biscuit selection at the coffee shop and soap in the loo. All very strange. When the Train was leaving exactly on time I felt a bit of horror - this is not how it's supposed to be.
Walking in the dawn to Amanda's place also felt strange - haven't been on a street walking after dark for four months now. Julia, Amanda's house mate gave us a warm welcome. The house is fantastic in the outer skirts of Brisbane with a beautiful view from the veranda.
When going for shopping the next morning we were suddenly greeted by a woman with 'I like your bilums'. Right away we responded back in Pidgin and had a chat with the PNG lady from East New Britain. It was soooo fun to see the faces of the other people in the bus... After that incident we felt even more displaced than before and the big shopping mall we visited seemed to be way to gigantic...

But Brisbane is a stunning city, with a great waterfront and a very nice Riverside park where all students and other young people can be found.

Our re-acculturization excercise went to extremes when we moved for the weekend into a Backpackers hostel in Brizzie city. The purpose was to go for a bit of dancing and we have achieved that goal. But I'd still prefer some Raggae-beats over house...

Koala cuddling and the Art Gallery completed our first days back in civilization.

Routes diverting
Fabienne and my time together is over now as our travel routes are parting - she's off to New Zealand while I'll be working my way now through the different cities towards Pohnpei.
Thx Fabi 4 d great taim wit u, bai mi misim yu!
