Makis, a colleague at the DWU had offered to take us for a Bushwalk in the area of his village just a short drive out of Madang. So one of the Fathers dropped us of at the starting point and we started a casual walk across the area. I was surprised how quickly there were no signs whatsoever of a nearby town: Traditional houses, well-worked gardens and pure Nature. We were a nice mixed group of expats and PNGs having lots of interesting conversations.
Ted, for example showed us how they used to create sing-sing play equipment out of a farne when they kids up in Mt. Hagen, his province of origin.
A couple of girls who were strolling round the Bush knew Makis and climbed for us a Betelnut Palm to fetch some Buai. I’m not sure if I know any 10-year-old child in Germany who would be able to climb this 15m high thin palmtree…
The walk was very enjoyable across some creeks and thick vegetation. Mid way there was a waterfall with wonderful, clear water. I'm afraid you’re starting to get tired of these dream-locations all along the way every five minutes. But this is this stunning country!!
Passing by Makis cousin’s house we were asked to sit down and have a chat. But all well organized: men and women each on their bench…
Babies are left for an afternoon nap in Bilums, hanging on a tree. It’s funny to hear the snoring out of that bag. Makes sense: Air is flowing through and it’s comfy. A mini version of a hammock.
We ended out walk at Mambu-Market, the top location to by Buai (Betelnut) and went home on PMV. What a nice trip!
Helloween!
A completely different program was scheduled for the evening: Halloween party at Marleen and Charley’s place. Lots of people came from all over the country for this party. Lots of nationalities, professions and styles – all-in-all quite some scary creatures!!! Trick or treat!!!
Sunday-chill
It doesn’t take much for a relaxed Sunday: A boat that gets you to the beach, some guys that prepare a barbecue (no role-model-stereotypes) and a couple of cold beer. Too sad, that it will be a bit more difficult in future to organize this.
Bill proves that as well on the other end of the world people are as nuts as my dad – you’d have a terrific time here!
